Cocktail stick cactus

Spiky Cactus

Spiky Cactus

Super spiky, the cacti that Ted and I made, inspired by the spiky, tiny and huge cacti that we saw this week at Kew Gardens – some of them were so tall that they towered over Ted. We thought that we would make some to have at home.  These cacti were fun, quick and simple to do – and I think that sticking the cocktail sticks in as spikes for the cactus is good for fine motor skills.  We have also displayed ours safely out of reach of little fingers. Here is how to make your own…

Materials

  • Foil
  • Green tissue paper
  • Cocktail sticks
  • Plant pot
  • Cello-tape

To make your own

  1. Scrunch foil into a very loose ball or oval shape
  2. Cover your foil in green tissue paper and secure at the bottom with cello-tape
  3. Place into a plant pot with the cello-tape at the bottom
  4. Stick cocktail sticks into the cactus, pushing most of the way in –  the sticks are spiky so best done with close adult supervision.
