I am really interested in activities that help children to develop their interest in and confidence with drawing, and this is a wonderful activity that we did as children, that I had totally forgotten about until we read the book Frida and Bear by Anthony Browne. It is a really lovely book in which the elephant Frida and her friend Bear both love to draw, but one day Bear can’t think of anything to draw and so Frida drew a shape and gave it to bear to turn it into something. The book is a series of shapes that Frida and Bear give to each other to turn into something through drawing extra lines onto the original shape. Ted and I have done this together a number of times, and having a shape as a starting point really helps with both confidence and imagination, looking at what a shape might be turned into with a few additional lines or shapes. Here are just a few of our drawings together – one of my favorites is Ted’s picture of a bulb growing shoots and roots.
