Pirate hat, eye patch and sword

Pirate hat, eye patch and sword

There was lots of Ahhhhhh in our house this morning, as Ted dressed in his pirate outfit ready for Pirate Day in his class at school today. Ted has been excited all over half term about Pirate Day and we spent part of yesterday afternoon making a pirate hat, eye patch and sword. He went off to school this morning looking the part, and totally thrilled with his outfit. Ted took a keen interest in designing these with me, and looked through some pictures to choose the sort of hat and sword he would have, and sketched some drawings to show me his ideas.

Here is how we made it, so you can make your own.

Materials

  • Black card
  • Staples
  • White card or paper
  • Glue
  • Red feather
  • Elastic
  • Black craft foam
  • Thick card
  • Scissors
  • Pencils
  • Red feather

For the hat

  1. Draw around half of a small plate to create the curve of the top of the hat, and follow the curve down to the sides to create the domed top
  2. Cut out the top
  3. Cut strips of card to go around the head
  4. Draw a simple outline of skull and cross bones onto white card, cut out and glue onto front of hat
  5. Glue feather onto top of hat
  6. Staple black strip of card onto either side of the back of the hat – checking it is tight enough to go round head

For the sword

  1. Draw outline of sword onto thick card
  2. Draw outline of the hand guard – ours kind of looked like a long foot – bend this and cut slits in either end to go over the sword
  3. Colour in sword
  4. Push handle end of sword through both slits in the hand guard

For the eye patch

  1. I drew around a small lid onto black craft foam, and created two half circles
  2. Cut out the half circles
  3. Staple elastic onto one of the eye patches
  4. Glue second eye patch over the staples
