I am really interested in activities that help children to develop their interest in and confidence with drawing, and this is a wonderful activity that we did as children, that I had totally forgotten about until we read the book Frida and Bear by Anthony Browne.  It is a really lovely book in which the elephant Frida and her friend Bear both love to draw, but one day Bear can’t think of anything to draw and so Frida drew a shape and gave it to bear to turn it into something. The book is a series of shapes that Frida and Bear give to each other to turn into something through drawing extra lines onto the original shape. Continue reading

We have been away for half term, and I took a small bag of handy and simple craft supplies with us in case of rainy days to provide something fun to make inside- luckily the weather was great most of the time, but these paper plate snakes were some of the things we made whilst away. We had made some of these ages ago, and thought they were perfect to make on holiday because they need very little in the way of materials. Continue reading

Pirate hat, eye patch and sword

There was lots of Ahhhhhh in our house this morning, as Ted dressed in his pirate outfit ready for Pirate Day in his class at school today. Ted has been excited all over half term about Pirate Day and we spent part of yesterday afternoon making a pirate hat, eye patch and sword. He went off to school this morning looking the part, and totally thrilled with his outfit. Ted took a keen interest in designing these with me, and looked through some pictures to choose the sort of hat and sword he would have, and sketched some drawings to show me his ideas.
