Dinosaur peg counting game

Dinosaur peg counting game

Ted is a big fan of dinosaurs and loves the series of books about Harry and his Dinosaurs, so when we were thinking of ways to help Ted learn numbers over this summer thought a dinosaur peg counting game might work well and here it is. This was very much a craft where I was doing most of the making – Ted’s involvement was colouring in some of the dinosaurs. The game did succeed in capturing Ted’s imagination, and he has carefully counted out the pegs for each dinosaur – it has helped him to match the number of the dinosaur with counting out the corresponding number of pegs. We had hoped that Ted would be able to peg each of the mini pegs onto the dinosaurs himself, but he found the little pegs to stiff to do it, so he counted and I pegged – if I was to do it again I would make larger dinosaurs so that he could use larger pegs.

Materials

  • Coloured card
  • Scissors
  • Felt tip pen
  • Coloured pencils
  • Mini wooden pegs

How we made them

  1. I drew some simple outlines of different dinosaurs onto paper and cut them out to use as templates
  2. Draw around the templates onto card and cut out card dinosaurs
  3. Number each dinosaur clearly with felt tip pen
  4. I provided Ted with a bowl of mini clothes pegs so that he could count out pegs for each dinosaur
