Clothes peg magnet fishing game

Ever since we went crabbing in Pembrokeshire over half term, Ted has wanted to make a fishing game, and here it is. He loved the thought of using a fishing pole and catching fish with magnets, and inspired by others we had seen on-line we set to work making our own version. We thought we would do red and blue fish with matching fishing poles, so that Ted and his friends could fish together. It has proved a great game for helping little ones learn patience and develop co-ordination skills because it needs quite a steady hand and good degree of accuracy to hold the pole and get the magnet to link up to the magnet on the fish. Here is a link to a great clothes peg fishing game that inspired us  http://www.parents.com/fun/arts-crafts/kid/simple-wood-crafts/?page=11#page=11

Materials

  • Six wooden clothes pegs
  • Blue and red paint
  • Magnetic strip – with sticky back
  • Googly eyes
  • Red and blue string
  • Two large buttons
  • Two chop sticks
  • Doubled sided tape
  • Shoe box

How we made them

  1. Paint three pegs blue and three pegs red – we left them to dry pegged around a bowl
  2. Put a strip of double sided tape around the end of the more pointed end of the chop stick
  3. Tie blue wool around the more pointed end of a chop stick and wrap it round the tape several times to make a handle and make knot to secure
  4. Tie or tape wool round other end of chop stick, with enough spare for fishing line
  5. Thread wool through large button and secure with a knot
  6. Stick magnetic strip onto back of button
  7. Repeat steps 2 – 6 for second chop stick using red wool
  8. When pegs are dry, add googly eyes and magnetic strips
  9. You are now ready to put your fish pegs into your shoe box and start fishing
